Kindle

– Nārada –

Venerable r̥ṣi Nārada is the author of these mantras of the poem dedicated to Śrī Dattātreya. It is composed in anuṣṭubh meter. The adored deity is mahātman Śrī Dattātreya.

I worship the divine Dattātreya – who has twisted hair and ash-whitened limbs, a spear in His hand, being the destroyer of all kinds of diseases and ocean of compassion!

  1. I humbly bow to Thee, Dattātreya! The creator, upholder and the destroyer of this Universe, the liberator from the existential bounds!
  2. I humbly bow to Thee, Dattātreya! Embodiment of compassion in a robe woven from space, destroyer of the death and [re]birth, purifier of the body!
  3. I humbly bow to Thee, Dattātreya! The One with the body sweetened with camphor, embodiment of Brahmā and omniscient of the divine scriptures!
  4. I humbly bow to Thee, Dattātreya! The sole splendor that, although made of the five elements, are lacking in shortness or longness, thinness or thickness, personal and family name!
  5. I humbly bow to Thee, Dattātreya! The perfect One, enjoyer of the sacrifice, the sacrifice itself, the sacrificer and the receiver of the sacrifice!
  6. I humbly bow to Thee, Dattātreya! The threefold nature: at the beginning Brahmā, at the middle Viṣṇu and at the end the divine Sadāsiva!
  7. I humbly bow to Thee, Dattātreya! Enslaver of the senses and conqueror of knowledge, embodiment of the enjoyment and object of enjoyment, witness able of yoga!
  8. I humbly bow to Thee, Dattātreya! Supreme brahman ever manifested, embodiment of the divine nature, wonderfully clad in a robe woven from space!
  9. I humbly bow to Thee, Dattātreya! Conqueror of the mental state, inhabitant of the mother-city (Mātāpura) within the great plain of Jambudvīpa!
  10. I humbly bow to Thee, Dattātreya! Who wander with a golden pot in the hand, from house to house through the villages, begging for a variously spiced food.
  11. I humbly bow to Thee, Dattātreya! Knower of the supreme Knowledge, earthly embodiment of the knowledge of Brahman, clad in a robe woven from space!
  12. I humbly bow to Thee, Dattātreya! Avadhūta with a corporeal-incorporeal form, who’s nature is the supreme Brahman – everlasting beatitude (ānanda).
  13. I humbly bow to Thee, Dattātreya! Shelter of the beyond the perception Reality, devoted to the righteousness and goodness, who’s spotless behaviour is the Truth itself.
  14. I humbly bow to Thee, Dattātreya! Brāhman wearing the sacrificial thread and a garland of forest-flowers, in the right hand keeping a mace and in the left hand a trident.
  15. I humbly bow to Thee, Dattātreya! The greatest among the gods, who’s nature is perishable-imperishable, who’s supreme worship bestows the liberation.
  16. I humbly bow to Thee, Dattātreya! Who’s nature is with and without attributes (guṇa). Datta! Who’s nature is own ātman. Datta! The rich in knowledge consort of Lakṣmī (Viṣṇu).
  17. I humbly bow to Thee, Dattātreya! This stotra removes all the sins, destroys the enemies and brings as a gift the sacred and profane knowledge.
  18. This wonderful stotra about Datta is revealed by Nārada through the kindness of Dattātreya!

Dattātreya-stotra ends here, being narrated by Nārada Muni
